Cambridge A Level Physics


Overview

The Cambridge A Level Physics course enables students to develop a strong understanding of physical principles, apply mathematical reasoning to real-world problems, and carry out practical investigations with confidence. Students learn to analyse data, evaluate experimental methods and apply physics concepts to unfamiliar contexts.

The course covers a broad range of topics including mechanics, waves, electricity, fields and modern physics. It also develops essential practical and analytical skills, ensuring students are well prepared for further study in physics, engineering and related scientific disciplines.

How our courses work

Syllabus and exams

The course prepares students for the Cambridge A Level Physics syllabus 9702. The full A Level qualification comprises examinations at AS Level and A Level, which may be taken together or separately.

Please note that practical skills are externally assessed and students will need access to laboratory equipment for this course, specifically for Paper 3 at AS Level (Advanced Practical Skills) and Paper 5 at A Level (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation).

Exams take place in June and November.

Course Advice

For students to study Cambridge A Level Physics, we strongly recommend that:

  • Students have studied Physics at IGCSE/GCSE level and achieved at least a Grade C or 5.
  • Students have a strong background in Mathematics (Grade B or 6 recommended), as mathematical skills are essential throughout the course.
  • Students have First Language English at Grade C or 4 to support written explanations and data interpretation.

The recommended IELTS equivalent is IELTS 6.0–6.5.

Our AS course will take approximately 250 hours of study. Our full A Level course will take approximately 500 hours of study. Both AS and A Level courses will require additional time for practical skills development, exam preparation and revision.
